Simplify Your Life by Learning How to Organize Your Kitchen Drawers in 3 Simple Steps!
Are your kitchen drawers making you crazy? Learn how to organize your messy kitchen drawers in 3 easy steps and simplify your life!
Since the beginning of the year, I’ve slowly been organizing little areas in my home.
One of the main rooms that need organizational help badly was the kitchen.
No matter how big or small our kitchen seems to be, it always seems to get filled up with stuff.
Last month I reorganized our kitchen spices, and it has been a game changer!

My next area to tackle was the dreaded utensil drawer.
My goodness. Why does one need so many kitchen utensils and gadgets??
It was already making me crazy, but when my super laid-back husband finally commented on how chaotic our kitchen drawers were, I decided to take action and get these things organized!
With the help of some in-drawer organizational tools from HEXA, I’ll show you how to easily organize your kitchen drawers in 3 easy steps.

Step 1: Inventory Your Kitchen Drawers
The first thing you want to do is take everything out of your drawer. Get it all out of there!
Once your kitchen drawer is completely empty, you can start to take inventory of all the kitchen utensils and gadgets you have.
And you know you have a lot of them!
The question is: “What do you actually use?“
Just like when I organized my spice drawer, as you start to go through your utensils, you’re guaranteed to find stuff in there you didn’t even know you had!
(Hello, garlic press and cherry tomato slicer….?)
Here are a few things to think about when deciding what needs to stay and what needs to go:
- When is the last time you used it?
- If you haven’t used it in the last 6 months, it’s time to get rid of it…no matter how “cool” of a gadget you think it is. (Bye-bye egg white separator….)
- Do you have multiples of the same utensil?
- If you have multiples of the same tool or utensil, maybe it’s time to get rid of a few. I think it’s safe to say most of us probably have multiple wooden spoons or silicone spatulas….but we don’t need 10 of them! Unless they’re tongs….apparently my husbands needs all 6 sets….
- Can you store some of these items somewhere else?
- Our kitchen utensil drawer was kind of a catch-all for everything, but there were things I found that I could store somewhere else.
- Random cookie cutters went into a plastic container and were stored with my baking things.
- Grilling tools and utensils were moved to a designated spot in the pantry.
- My most used utensils (wooden spoons, spatula, whisk, etc) were moved to a utensil crock on the countertop.
- Our kitchen utensil drawer was kind of a catch-all for everything, but there were things I found that I could store somewhere else.
Once you’ve decided what stays and what goes, toss or donate the items that you no longer need.
Step 2: Wipe Out Your Kitchen Drawers
When is the last time you emptied out your kitchen drawers and gave them a wipe down?
If I’m being honest, that last time for me what when we moved into this house.
If I’m being really honest, since this house was a new build, I’m not even sure that I did it then!

Over time, dirt, dust, and crumbs collect in those drawers….even if you don’t realize it!
The chances are you won’t be needing to empty and organize your drawers for awhile after this, so go ahead and give them a quick clean!
Try quickly wiping down your drawers with:
- Soap+Water+Sponge
- All Purpose Kitchen Spray
- Wet Paper Towel or Baby Wipe (if you’re in a time crunch)
Step 3: Use Drawer Trays and/or Bins to Keep Things Neat
Now here’s where the magic happens: using drawer trays and bins to keep your kitchen utensils and gadgets organized (and to keep your drawers from getting crazy again).
I’ve been using HEXA products to organize my kitchen drawers, and I’ve been impressed with them for several reasons:
- Expandable Trays
- Many of their kitchen drawer organizers are expandable, allowing you to resize it in a way that works for you.
- Dirt-Proof Design
- Their open hexagon tray bottom keeps dirt, dust, and crumbs from collecting in the trays.
- Several Size and Design Options
- There are several sizes and designs available to fit all my in-drawer organizational needs.
- Their modern and modular design allows you to customize how to organize things by size.
- Affordable
- Unlike some other organizational containers, I’ve found HEXA products to be very affordable.
Just like when I did my dollar store pantry organization and reorganized my spices in a spice drawer, having a “home” for everything makes me feel less cluttered and more efficient in the kitchen.

Let’s do a little before and after, shall we?
I also tidied up the silverware drawer and the drawer I keep measuring cups and spoons in.
I can’t tell you how much better this view makes me feel! Not only do I feel free of clutter, but I now know exactly where everything is, whenever I need it!
